Time as Material - Designing for Transformation
How can we design architecture that does not culminate in a finished state, but is instead designed for gradual transformation over time?
Using an existing badminton hall in Frederiksberg as a case study, the project explores how wear, discoloration, patina, and traces of use can be understood as valuable records of a building’s life rather than signs of decay. Rather than treating time as a force that diminishes architecture, the project investigates how change can become an active architectural parameter.
Through a mapping of the façade’s existing traces, a strategy is developed in which materials and details are adapted to different levels of exposure to use, climate, and moisture. The façade is organized into three levels of robustness, where materials, junctions, and transitions are carefully designed to support gradual and controlled ageing. Brick is introduced in the most exposed areas, while aluminium is used where weathering can contribute positively to the architectural expression over time.
The project ultimately proposes an architecture that does not seek to resist time, but to accommodate it. Robustness is understood not as the ability to remain unchanged, but as the capacity to absorb traces, patina, and repair as natural parts of a building’s ongoing life.
